The Glenview Park District wants to make their recreation facilities safe for all to enjoy. As a result they have made the following provisions in order to protect participants.
The Glenview Park District’s Thor-Guard Lightning Prediction System has been activated at locations throughout the district. The Thor-Guard system warns users of parks and golf courses when lightning danger is approaching. Thor-Guard units are installed at Community Park West, Glenview Park Golf Club, Glenview National 9 Golf Club, Flick and Roosevelt Pools and the Westbrook School baseball complex.
Thor-Guard’s warning system consists of horns which sound with two different tone sequences, a single 15-second blast when lightning is imminent and people should seek shelter and three short 5-second blasts when danger has passed. An amber strobe light blinks from the time the warning blast sounds until the all clear has sounded. The system operates from 7 am to 10 pm from March 1 until the Monday following the conclusion of fall outdoor sports leagues in November. System testing takes place at 9:30 am on the first Tuesday of every month.
We hope that neighbors near these facilities understand the importance of these systems in protecting our outdoor facilities users from the potentially catastrophic effects of a lightning strike. If you have any questions about this system, please e-mail Tom Kolk, Risk Manager at tom.kolk@glenviewparks.org or call him at 224-521-2288.
The Glenview Park District has purchased and placed into service 17 automated external defibrillators, or AED’s. An AED allows lay persons to take advantage of sophisticated lifesaving medical technology. These units, when applied to the chest of a cardiac arrest patient, are designed to interpret heart rhythms and if needed, deliver a potentially life-saving electrical shock. This shock can allow a heart to return to its normal heart rhythm even before paramedics arrive on the scene.
AEDs are located at the Glenview Park Golf Club, Glenview National 9 Golf Club, Roosevelt Pool, Flick Pool, the Glenview Tennis Club, The Grove, The Redfield Estate, Park Center, Wagner Farm, Glenview Ice Center, the Tyner Center, and the park district Administration building. Park district staff at these locations have been prepared to use these devices through a comprehensive training program covering both CPR and AED’s. In-service training and re-certification keeps these employees ready for any emergency.
The Glenview Park District assumes no risk or legal liability for injuries associated with a park district program. Participants in all park district programs must sign a waiver of liability as part of their program registration. Be sure to check your own insurance coverage before registering for any park district program or activity.
